Let Picarro Ensure Your Operational Continuity With the New HON Amendments

In April 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a landmark rule that significantly tightens clean air standards for chemical plants and commercial sterilizers that emit ethylene oxide (EtO). This rule aims to reduce over 6,200 tons of hazardous air pollutants annually—an 80% cut from current levels—with specific targets for high-risk facilities, including those in healthcare and sterilization.

For commercial sterilizers, this rule introduces new requirements for emissions controls and, for the first time, mandates continuous fenceline monitoring of EtO to ensure public health protections. Facilities must now measure and report concentrations at the property boundary, with data made publicly available. These measures are designed to lower cancer risks in surrounding communities—supporting the Biden administration’s Cancer Moonshot initiative.

We help sterilizers meet these new requirements by providing advanced real-time monitoring solutions built on our patented CRDS technology. Our systems offer unmatched sensitivity, stability, and reliability—critical for detecting low-level EtO emissions and demonstrating compliance with the new EPA rule. By delivering trusted data with minimal maintenance and operator burden, we empower facilities to stay ahead of regulation, reduce community risk, and protect public health.
