Learning Objectives:

  • Review mobile advanced leak detection solutions and their primary use cases
  • Understand the ALD-based DIM process implemented by CenterPoint
  • Highlight several examples of the improved DIM process

The webinar titled "How to Incorporate Advanced Leak Detection To Improve Your DIM Program and Reduce Risk" offered a detailed overview of how advanced leak detection can significantly enhance distribution integrity management (DIM) programs. This session was co-conducted by representatives from Picarro Inc., CenterPoint Energy, and the Southern Gas Association.

The speakers outlined how conventional DIM models, which predominantly depend on historical and static parameters for risk prediction, can be significantly improved by incorporating mobile Advanced Leak Detection (ALD). They discussed how ALD provides real-time methane data, enabling a more accurate and granular view of risk.

This more detailed approach to risk management can optimize crucial capital investment decisions such as pipe replacement initiatives, thereby reducing risks associated with methane leaks. The speakers also touched on the need to update Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulations to include advanced leak detection programs, considering their potential to reduce unintentional releases from gas pipelines.

The webinar was a comprehensive guide to understanding the pivotal role that advanced leak detection plays in enhancing DIM programs and reducing associated risks.
