R&D Engineer
Location: Sunnyvale, CA

The R&D Engineer will play an important role in the development and manufacture of a new generation of ultra-sensitive, field-deployable, real-time molecular analyzers with parts-per-billion sensitivity and based on an all-optical technique called Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy (CRDS). The R&D Engineer will take the lead in development of new ultra-trace (parts-per-billion and parts-per-trillion level) and stable isotope applications for the Picarro CRDS product platform, with the ultimate goal being to transfer these new applications from the laboratory to the marketplace, playing a pivotal roll in the following activities: 1) the discovery process to understand which laser wavelengths may best be utilized for a given application, including a prediction of the expected instrument performance; 2) an experimental investigation to validate the spectroscopy as well as to understand the chemistry of the gas mixtures, including the interaction with the materials of the instrument; 3) configuration of the first instrument to measure this species, including the necessary spectroscopic analysis, to optimize the measurement of the target gas concentration; 4) calibration against known gas standards and/or prepared gas mixtures; 5) working with customers and scientific leaders to tailor the product to provide a fully integrated solution for the customer; and 6) transfer of relevant test protocols to the manufacturing team for integration into the production line. We#re seeking an individual who is comfortable and excited about working in a start-up environment, specifically with regard to working across traditional job boundaries. A technical background in lasers, spectroscopy or analytical chemistry is preferred. Experimental experience, including computational analysis skills, is a must.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research & Development:

    Lead the investigation and development of new applications for the Picarro CRDS ultra-trace gas analyzer, including:

    • spectroscopic investigation using spectral databases and broadband spectrometry
    • application investigation to establish the basic configuration of the instrument, including gas handling and sample pre-treatment, to meet customer and market requirements
    • instrument configuration for optimized performance in the customer application, including custom sample preparation, the use of purchased gas standards, as well as preparing unique gas mixtures in-house
    • Development of time- and gas-efficient calibration and certification tests
  • Manufacturing:

    • Define and transfer to manufacturing the calibration and certification tests for those applications which are developed into products

Qualifications:

  • > 2 years laboratory experience in physics, analytical chemistry, lasers, or related field.
  • Computational analysis experience, including fluency in a software programming language such as Python, LabVIEW, C, Visual Basic, or Matlab, and/or a graphical analysis package such as Origin, is required.
  • Understanding of gas and gas-surface chemistry and experience in gas handling techniques and equipment are preferred.
  • Strong communications skills are essential, both written and oral.
  • Must possess the ability to work across functional boundaries and organizational levels inside the company.
  • Minimum education is a B.S. in engineering or physical science.

Sales Engineer
Location: Sunnyvale, CA

Description:
The primary role of the position is to provide an immediate impact on company sales by generating new business through customer acquisition and increasing incremental sales, in an assigned territory or market segment. The position will drive and accelerate the company's inbound and outbound sales activity while contributing to the success of Picarro's direct and indirect sales channels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify and contact Picarro prospects to generate new business.
  • Listen to customers and use astute questioning to understand, anticipate and exceed their needs.
  • Able to overcome technical and business objections to create win-win solutions.
  • Solve client problems by working closely with other members of the sales team and/or properly utilizing the experience within the broader Picarro organization.
  • Persuade customers on appropriate Picarro solutions that best satisfy their needs in terms of quality, price and performance.
  • Craft customer proposals and negotiate options to meet both customer and company needs
  • Build and maintain close relationships with customers and channel partners.
  • Identify and monitor customer trends in Green House Gas monitoring, Isotopic Water Analysis, CO2 Sequestration and top Picarro market segments based upon incoming information.
  • Relay pertinent customer feedback on product enhancement ideas and market opportunities

Qualifications:

  • Consultative sales and/or telesales experience in a business-to-business environment with a proven track record of sales performance.
  • Quota carrying experience with analytical instrumentation sales a plus.
  • Energetic, highly motivated and strong ability to influence others.
  • Some formal sales training is desired.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or related science fields.
  • Knowledge of the operation of academic research processes and/or laboratories, air/water testing requirements and procedures, and air quality control regulations that apply to Picarro customers.
  • Ability to patiently and efficiently guide customers through the technical and applications issues associated with pre-sale of products/services
  • A results oriented, team player with the drive to succeed and highly motivated to learn in a faced paced, entrepreneurial environment

Manufacturing Test Engineer
Location: Sunnyvale, CA

Description:
The CRDS Manufacturing Test Engineer will play an important role in the manufacture of a new generation of ultra-sensitive, field-deployable, real-time gas analyzers with parts-per-billion sensitivity and based on an all-optical technique called Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy (CRDS). Manufacture of the gas analysis instrument product requires careful and reproducible measurements taken as part of the process flow as well as during in-house product validation and certification. The CRDS Manufacturing Test Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of the configuration and test process for our products. Beyond managing the day-to-day flow of instruments through the test process to the final certificate of compliance for the instrument prior to shipment to the customer, the individual will also be significantly involved in defining and improving the test equipment, procedures, and software used within the manufacturing process. The Test Engineer will also be responsible for implementing and maintaining the internal data management systems. Test automation including managing the analysis routines and insuring the integrity of the test protocols will also be a large part of the job function with the goal of increasing throughput and efficiency of the testing process. Picarro is seeking an individual who is highly motivated and excited about working in a start-up, fast-paced environment and is comfortable working across traditional job boundaries. A strong technical background in instrument testing and test and data automation is required. A track record of effective software development as part of a team is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing the testing work-in-progress against customer delivery
  • Provide the Certificate of Compliance for all instrumentation shipped to customers.
  • Develop and support manufacturing software for configuration and calibration of the production instrumentation for all existing product lines.
  • Create and maintain data management and work-in-progress tracking systems.
  • Automation the testing / data analysis processes.

Qualifications:

  • > 3 years experience in instrument or product testing or related field.
  • > 3 years software programming experience in LabVIEW, C, Visual Basic, or other programming language (LabVIEW preferred). Expertise in Python desirable.
  • Advanced experience / skill using Matlab including the creation of scripts.
  • Manufacturing test software experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong communications skills are essential- both written and oral.

Opto-mechanical Technician
Location: Sunnyvale, CA

Description:
Picarro is looking for an experienced opto-mechanical technician for production and prototype optical assembly builds. The optical assembly is comprised of an external cavity and several optical components (lenses, prisms, and detectors) which are to be placed during active optical alignment using the output from typical fiber coupled 1550 nm telecom DFB laser. Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail are essential along with the ability to read instrument output (oscilloscope, power meters, beam profiler, video camera) during the placement of critical optical components. Beyond these primary skills, the ideal candidate will be capable of a wide range of assembly procedures covering a variety of subassemblies of the product.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fabrication of laser ring cavity and/or wavelength monitor subassemblies.

Qualifications:

  • 2 years experience as opto-mechanical technician working in a production or prototype environment.
    1. Experience with active optical alignment procedures
    2. Experience with optical and electrical instrumentation (oscilloscope, power meter, power supplies)
    3. Experience with UV and thermally cured epoxy attach procedures of optical components
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong verbal communications skills for effective interaction with manufacturing engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Good teamwork skills.
